What is your earliest memory?

In the first interview, the subject said her earliest memory was sitting on the beach with the subject’s mother. The subject’s mother told her the wind was the whispering of her ancestors. The subject said she felt at that moment that she could trust her mother and she would always be there to protect her.

In the second interview, the subject confirmed this memory.

How did you feel about your mother?

In the first interview, the subject said her mother was the proud owner of a speakeasy and she was an unwed mother. The subject said her mother had no fear of the police, since she always bribed them. The subject’s mother did not want to marry, though she was attracted to men, since the subject’s mother felt she had gotten all she wanted out of a man. The subject’s mother did not look very Negro, and the subject added there are Jews who do not look very Jewish. The subject’s mother was not ashamed to be colored, and often performed charity to Galveston and Houston’s Negro communities.

In the second interview, the subject said her mother usually labeled herself as White or as Indian, and not as Negro. The subject’s mother kept around a colored woman around, whom she called her maid; who was actually her darker- skinned cousin. The subject’s mother was addicted to heroin, and would become violent when her dose was delayed.

How did you feel about your father?

In the first interview, the subject said her father was only her father, in so far as he provided her mother with semen and paid her child support each month. The subject’s mother was fond of the subject’s father, admiring his skill in business, his generosity, and his good humor;, but the subject’s mother considered him only a friend.

In the second interview, the subject said she greatly enjoyed greatly the few times she spent with the subject’s father. The subject said she wishes her father could have raised her.

When did you realize you were a little girl?

In the first interview, the subject said she once asked her mother if she could be half-girl like she was half-black. Her mother said she was only 1/8 black. The subject asked if she could be 1/8 boy. Her mother laughed and said she was all girl. The subject still does not feel all girl.

In the second interview, the subject said she went to ballet classes taught by a Russian emigre on the outskirts of Houston. The subject said she loved ballet and did very well in it. The subject reports that the classes ended abruptly when one of her classmates realized they were half -sisters, and objected to taking classes with a “nigger”. The interviewer does not understand why the subject brought this up.

What did you think of boys growing up?

In the first interview, the subject said her mother did not keep her away from boys. However, the subject said that since she did not attend school and was taught by private tutors, the subject did not have many chances to socialize with boys.

In the second interview, the subject said she remembered the local youth harassing her on the street and telling her that though she looked White, she had that red- hot African blood in her.

What is your earliest sexual memory?

In the first interview, the subject said she lived in such a sexually free environment, she could not possibly remember her first sexual memory.

In the second interview, the subject said her earliest sexual memory was staring at the neck of a fellow ballet student and wishing she could kiss it. The ballet student was her half -sister.

How did you learn about sex?

In the first interview, the subject said she learned about sex after seeing two drunk patrons try it in front of her. The subject went to her mother and the subject’s mother explained sex.

In the second interview, the subject said she learned about sex when her half -sister from the ballet class made crude remarks about their shared father “humping” the subject’s mother.

When did you first learn about homosexuality?

In the first interview, the subject said that she was a homosexual. The subject said she would not hide this fact from the interviewer just like she would not hide that she was colored. The subject’s mother was accepting of homosexuality, so the subject felt free to tell her the truth. The subject said (out of nowhere) she admired Jewish people for their industriousness, money-sense, and their strength in the face of adversity. The subject did not say how she first learned about homosexuality.

In the second interview, the subject said she learned about homosexuality from her mother’s many homosexual friends.

What were your sexual fantasies as a teen-ager?

In the first interview, the subject said she fantasized about putting her hand in the vaginas of attractive young women.

In the second interview, the subject said she fantasized about reuniting with her half-sister and showing her how well she could dance and then they would make love.

How did you lose your virginity?

In the first interview, the subject said when she was thirteen, she met a White girl, who was about her age, at her mother’s saloon. The White girl came to the bar with her father, who was an alcoholic and who got custody of the White girl after her mother ran off with a colored man. The subject engaged in sex play with the White girl (”playing doctor”) in the back room of the saloon. The White girl’s father discovered them and yelled at his daughter, saying that the subject was a “nigger” like the man the daughter’s mother ran off with.

In the second interview, the subject recalled her wedding night with her husband. The husband insisted the subject keep very still and not make a noise. The husband lost his erection several times and had to get out of the bed many times to work on returning it. This took around forty minutes. After the husband ejaculated in the subject’s vagina, the husband beat the subject.

What do you think about when you touch yourself?

In the first interview, the subject said that whenever she tries to masturbate, the subject’s aunt by marriage interrupts her.

In the second interview, the subject said she does fantasize about having sex with her neighbor Mrs. Nine.

How do you feel about your parents now?

In the first interview, the subject said her mother died when she was sixteen years old. The subject said she was told it was a heroin overdose, but the subject had convinced the subject’s mother to get clean off heroin many months earlier. The subject believes the subject’s mother was killed by the Mafia^[2]. The subject wants to one day avenge her mother, but she does not see how she can at this time.

In the second interview, the subject said her father died a month before her mother’s death, leaving her and her mother with nothing in his will.

Do you feel you married the right person?

In the first interview, the subject said there was never a right man for her. The subject is not interested in men. At best, the subject wanted a wealthy man to take care of her and give her a house with a garden. The subject now has a house with a garden and a comfortable income from multiple barbershops. If the subject has to deal with occasional vampire bites, that is just her fate in life.

In the second interview, the subject said she wished she could have married a woman.

Do you ever wish you were the husband?

In the first interview, the subject said that behind his manly exterior, the subject’s husband is a pathetic and cowardly individual who is ruled by his maiden aunt. The subject said she has lost all no respect anymore for her husband. The subject said she has more respect for his maiden aunt, who revealed to the subject that she is actually Creole. The subject said that was admirable.

In the second interview, the subject said she would like to be her husband and run his businesses openly, instead of from behind the scenes.
