The woman she considers her mother is the prim spinster woman who adopted her along with her also- elderly brother. Though her this adoptive mother was cold to her at first, she later warmed up. In the second interview, the subject said her adoptive mother was a Russian agricultural official working in the Ukraine. The adoptive mother was a young widow who never got the chance to have children of her own with the love of her life, so she adopted an unrelated boy and girl from an Odessa orphanage. The girl was Eleven and the boy was Mr. Eleven. The adoptive mother was affectionate to the subject, but also highly demanding. Others tell the subject that she is very similar in personality to her adoptive mother. **How did you feel about your father?** In the first interview, the subject said she has no memory of her birth father either. Her adoptive father was a shy man prone to stuttering. In the second interview, the subject said she has no memory of her birth father or birth mother, but she was told they were both Jewish. Her adoptive mother spoke of her late husband as the father of the Elevens. The late husband had died a month into their marriage, when he accidentally fell into a thresher he was examining. People said that Mr. Eleven had a personality similar to the late husband of their adoptive mother. **When did you realize you were a little girl?** In the first interview, the subject said a farm hand got angry at her adoptive mother and called her “Mister”. instead of “Miss”. The subject asked her adoptive mother what this meant and the adoptive mother explained the polite forms of address for each gender. The subject did not like that her gender was apparent in her surname, but she believes it cannot be helped. In the second interview, the subject said the man who misgendered her adoptive mother was a peasant who was angry about collectivization, so he called the adoptive mother by the masculine version of her surname. The subject asked her adoptive mother what that meant and her adoptive mother said that men who get angry at women who don’t do what men want will call them men. The subject realized her gender was based on how aggressive she appeared to other people. **What did you think of boys growing up?** In the first interview, the subject said she would play with boys and girls equally. The subject was especially close with the future Mr. Eleven, who was the son of her neighbors. Though she broke a slate board over his head the first time they met, they grew to love each other. In addition, she played chess with all the boys and beat them. In the second interview, the subject said she was not socializing with other children except to play chess with them. The subject remarked that she beat the Soviet boys in chess and not the Canadian boys, which she feels is more impressive. **What is your earliest sexual memory?** In the first interview, the subject said her earliest sexual memory was dancing with her future husband at a barn dance. In the second interview, the subject said her earliest sexual memory was snuggling with her adoptive brother during a very cold winter night with her adoptive brother. **How did you learn about sex?** In the first interview, the subject said she learned about sex from seeing the animals on the farm mate. In the second interview, the subject said she learned about sex from the Young Pioneers. **When did you first learn about homosexuality?** In the first interview, the subject said she did not learn about homosexuality until World War II, when she heard the military did not allow homosexuals. In the second interview, the subject said her adoptive mother warned her when the subject was twelve that the Homintern was a dangerous organization, much more dangerous and decadent than the National Socialists. **What were your sexual fantasies as a teen-ager?** In the first interview, the subject said she fantasized about being caught in the rain with her idealized lover. They would retire to a barn to make love. The subject said she is the luckiest girl in the world. In the second interview, the subject said that Dmitry (her husband) has been an excellent partner in this mission. The subject’s husband is calm and collected without being icy. The subject’s husband never contradicts their agreed upon backstory, and he pays attention to what the Americans around them say. The subject only complains that he spends too much time indulging in Betti’s whims. **Do you ever wish you were the husband?** In the first interview, the subject said that is a queer thought that has never occurred to her., bBut she supposes that she would not like to change bodies with her husband. In the second interview, the subject said she has often thought she would like to exchange bodies with her husband. Her chess opponents would respect her if she had the body of a man and her husband’s significant bulge might psych them out. In addition, her husband might be happier as a ballerina and not a support dancer. However, she does not think their skills would transfer like that. --- 1.
